History and Philosophy

Our History

Hillwood Playcare pre-school was established in 1965. The school proudly maintains the Tennessee 3 Star Quality license. Hillwood employs both an art and music teacher, so the children have art or music every day. The school is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children 6 weeks to 5 years of age. During the summer, we also offer a program for children who have finished kindergarten through the second grade.

Our Philosophy

We believe that parents are the first teachers of their children and remain the most important adults in the life of any child. We work to befriend your child and respect the parent/child bond. We believe that children are lifelong learners and that learning encompasses physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth. We also believe that children learn best through play, hands-on activities, negotiating socially, and manipulating their own environment.

We strive to provide a warm and accepting atmosphere. Through exploration and creative experiences, children learn from successes as well as failures. At Playcare, children are given the opportunity to initiate choices of activities. Our goals include:

  1. Enhancing increased interest and appreciation in the art, music, language arts, mathematics, science, creative dramatics, large and fine motor skills as well as social awareness areas.
  2. Promoting the growth of each child’s sense of self worth.
  3. Developing awareness in health and safety habits, and increasing each child’s capacity to reason while encouraging a spirit of inquiry.
  4. Encourage each child to appreciate and celebrate the uniqueness of others.

The experience of early childhood education is important for meeting a child’s current needs and preparing them for later education, only in the sense that any experience supports a later one. Research shows that children who have had positive learning experiences beginning in infancy are more successful in their future endeavors. At Hillwood Playcare, we strive to develop a person who will contribute positively to society.
